Big Island's Best Beaches
The Big Island is often not mentioned for its beaches but don't be mislead - The Big Island offers many of the world’s best snorkeling beaches. The white sand beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii may be fewer but they offer spectacular silky soft sands you won’t easily forget. And as an added perk, the beaches are never crowded.
Our Editors Favorite Picks:
Hapuna Beach near Manua Kea Beach Resort: Noted for its extraordinary white soft sand, it is the islands most popular beach. The surf tends to be higher here and is not ideal for small children.
Anaehoomlu (A Bay) at Waikoloa Beach Resort. The water here can be almost mirror-like in the summer months and is perfect for families with young children. Winter weather can produce some surf but it generally remains calm. It is perfect for wading and snorkeling. The North end borders with the Marriott resort and includes a sport shack which rents equipment and catamaran tours. Green Sea turtles can be found just past the public facilities. Anaehoomalu was once the site of royal fishponds and archeologists have found evidence that this was where ancient Hawaiians dwelled over 1000 years ago, which are now the site of a nature preserve.
Kahaluu Beach is the islands best easy-access snorkeling destination. The bay feels more like a giant natural aquarium brimming with colorful marine fish and more green sea turtles than you can count. It is just south of Kona along Ali’i drive. It is less private than other beaches but the snoreking is well worth it. Parking can be at a premium.
