Cancun sits at the tip of a boot shaped landmass on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. There is more art, history and archeology here than you can take in during a short stay. It should be noted that the ancient Mayans were mathematicians, astronomers, philosophers and architects, leaving behind ancient artifacts of grand civilizations. There are plenty of ancient ruins nearby, Tumum and Chichen Itza being the two closest. One fabulous destination for the day is Xcaret, a large scale eco-archeologiccal park offering a Disney flavor to its attractions. It includes authentic Mayan ruins, a recreation of a Mayan village, dolphin performances, horsebackriding, and an underground river that runs through a cave to a white sand beach.
The brilliant, posh and entertaining hotel district of Cancun is inspiring in a more modern way. What we notice the most is the creative and beautiful architecture, that makes each resort a destination unto itself. There are a total of 11 public beaches along the Paseo. All the beaches in Mexico are free, although some hotels would prefer that you did not know that. Our editors voted Chac-Mool as the prettiest of Cancun’s beaches. Downtown in Plaza Garibaldi you will find markets shopping. For those that love to snorkel, include Isla Mujeres, Puerta Adventuras and Akumal as day trips.
