Haleakala Crater - Maui's Most Spectacular Attraction

Looking for a memorable Maui excursion? Why not bike down the side of a famed Haleakala crater on the island of Maui.

In Hawaiian, Haleakala means ‘house of the sun.’ Haleakala Crater is the centerpiece of the isle of Maui and is central to many of the legends and folklore of the island.

The volcano has long been thought to be the island’s soul. In ancient times it was visited as a spiritual retreat. Those who make the trek at dawn to watch the sunrise say they feel the myth and magic of the land. The crater is so vast the island of Manhattan could fit inside its perimeter. It emanates a sense of power and awe. And with good cause, the volcano stretches across most of the island. The center resembles the surface of the moon and at an altitude of 12,000 ft. the clouds are close enough to touch.

Be sure to take the Sunrise Experience tour, an early morning trek to watch the sun rise, followed by a 20 mile downhill bike ride. Bring your camera and dress in layers. The tour guides provide parkas to protect from the early morning high altitude chill.
