The 2010 Olympic games, coming to Western Canada, may be three years away, but preparations have been in full swing since Vancouver was awarded the games in the summer of 2003. Vancouver has always been a vibrant, thriving western Canadian
destination. As the capital of British Columbia (link other story). Why
not beat the crowds and plan a trip now. A Vancouver vacation rental
home will make your stay even more comfortable.
Fifty years ago a group of visionary business men built a ski resort
named Whistler Mountain with the intent of attracting the attention of
the Olympic Planning Committee. Five decades and more than 4
unsuccessful bids later, that dream became reality when Vancouver was
named the Official host cityof the 2010 Olympic games.
Over $3 billion is being invested in infrastructure: hotels, highways and transportation systems to support the 15,000 athletes, media and staff, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of spectators expected to descend uponthe Vancouver area. The games have helped fast–track projects like the Shangri-La Vancouver and the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotels. Several convention sites are being built or renovated as future competition venues in Richmond and Cambie. The Pacific Coliseum is getting a facelift as the home of the figure skating rink. Another $600 million is being spent on the Sea-to-Sky Highway which will greatly improve the sometimes treacherous 9-mile drive to Whistler
The BC Place Statium, located halfway between Whistler and the False Creek area (future home of the athletes’ village) will host the medal ceremonies and the opening and closing ceremonies. The 2010 games will be the first to feature an indoor arena for the opening and closing ceremonies with Cirquedu Soleil type productions.
