Bolinas has long-served as a weekend getaway for San Franciscans, located one hour from the Golden Gate Bridge via California's famous Highway #1, along the coast. Bolinas and the entire West Marin area is home to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Point Reyes National Seashore, Muir Woods National Park and Mount Tamaplias State Park. The area is unique in that open space is plentiful but San Francisco is not far away.
